The University Honors Program will host the 2008 National Association of African American Honors Program Conference Oct. 16-18 on TSU's campus.

The conference's purpose is to promote the honors programs of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Predominantly Black Colleges and Universities. This year's theme is, "Changing the Face of HBCUs Through Honors."

"Every (HBCU) should be well represented through their honors program," said director of the University Honors Program, Sandra Holt.

In May 1990, 20 honors program directors met at Morehouse College in Atlanta to discuss establishing a program that promoted continued growth through cognitive experiences, encouraged empathetic responses for students and ignited a better way of living in their life, community and nation.

"There is a need for great people in this generation, not successful people," explained associate director of the UHP, William Latham. "We strive to go beyond success in this program."

The conference will include a graduate and career fair, hosting 71 different graduate and professional schools and five major companies. On-site interviews, extensive personal and professional development workshops and several social events will also take place.

The conference will enable students to expand their brand," said Melvin Williams, a junior psychology major from Memphis and the reigning Mr. NAAHP. "(Participants) will experience great networking opportunities and establish friendships with other students."

The UHP will host LoveNoise for conference participants and TSU students on opening night, Friday, Oct. 16. LoveNoise will be a collaboration of a jazz ensemble, open mic poetry and neo-soul music. The event will be held under a tent on the old plaza of the main campus.

On Saturday, the conference will host a youth domestic violence seminar for area high school students. The seminar will explore domestic violence in relationships of all kinds and how they affect today's youth.
