While the annual Blue and White football game brought back a host of local alumni to Hale Stadium this weekend, fans also eagerly awaited the announcement of the winners from Student Election Commission week.
Patrick Walker-Reese, a junior history education major from Nashville was elected Student Government Association President; Ashley Floyd, a junior speech communication major from Memphis, was elected SGA Vice-President; and Cecelia Friday, a junior business major from Detroit was elected Miss TSU2008-2009.
While Walker-Reese ran unopposed, Friday took the crown from Carroll Wesson by only 27 votes. Floyd obtained her title with a difference of 273 votes.
"This is like a dream come true! I am so excited," Friday said.
Many students were satisfied with the results and were happy to see the week filled with students campaigning for top positions on campus finally come to an end.
Dominic Matthews, a senior criminal justice major from Memphis said, "I think that SEC week was one of the best ones I have experienced. I also feel that the freshmen class enjoyed the week just as I did."
Matthews was content with SEC week as a whole, but others were not. Walker-Reese said, "I was sadly disappointed with SEC week. It was not decorated nor was it promoted."
Although he was dissatisfied with the week, Walker-Reese was happy about his win. "I want to thank the TSU family for their support. I would like to also thank the administration and Mr. Latham for his guidance."
With several students ready to see the platforms each leader proposed executed, Friday made sure to suggest some of her future plans for Big Blue Country. "The first thing I am going to do is give all freshmen 'I Love TSU' t-shirts along with a ticket to the John A. Merritt Classic just to show my appreciation for them choosing TSU during freshmen week while they are moving into their residence halls."
Tia Clark and Gionni Maze were elected sophomore and senior class presidents, respectively, while no one was nominated for the junior class position. John Little took home the title as graduate student SGA Representative.
