What We Think
The Meter endorses Reese, Floyd and Aikins
Issue date: 4/7/08 Section: Forum
After conducting a series of interviews with the candidates running for SGA president, vice president and Miss TSU, The Meter has chosen to endorse Patrick Walker Resse, Ashley Floyd and Ashlee Aikins.
Unfortunately, this year arguably the top position of SGA will be pursued by an uncontested candidate.
While this is a disappointing circumstance, Resse is by no means a disappointing candidate.
We were pleased to find that Reese was not excited by the concept of running unopposed.
However, despite this fact, he said that he feels it was his purpose to serve as SGA president.
One strong point Resse made was the responsibility to reach out to freshman and help them to understand the great legacy of TSU with the implementation of freshman week.
He additionally presented interesting ideas of restructuring the SGA to encourage higher standards of responsibility and accountability.
At the same time he said that he wanted to increase the visibility and influence of the SGA by enforcing rules and contracts that members will sign.
His pledge to go to sleep tired everyday was his dislike for not using influence in a positive way and was testament to his potential for leadership.
We were impressed by Charnika Garrison and Warren Burke presenting concrete and feasible goals for their candidacy of SGA vice president.
Ultimately, however, we were won over by Floyd's plans to make responsibility and accountability key points of her platform.
We were also encouraged by her statement that she would be involved in SGA as an officer or as an active student.
Floyd stressed the specific need to make SGA a more business oriented entity that follows parliamentary procedure in addition to holding members of the SGA accountable.
We were impressed by her plans to begin implementation of her platform immediately as in her current position as Speaker of the House rather than waiting to be elected.
